Frequently Asked Questions

Please check Frequently Asked Questions about the ISOCARP Congress below. Can't find the answer to your question? Send us an e-mail at brussels@isocarp.org.

FORMAT

What is the format of the Congress?

The 2022 Brussels Congress combines a live in-person gathering of delegates with a virtual online component. The in-person portion of the 58th ISOCARP World Planning Congress will take place from 1–2 October 2022, with selected sessions to be live-streamed for Virtual Participants.

Given the continuing uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic, why not go fully virtual?

The health and safety of our Congress participants remain our top priority. However, we also acknowledge the fact that virtual alternatives do not and cannot replicate the in-person experience, despite innovative technologies and approaches. Our experience from the past years' fully Virtual Congress and Hybrid Congress was very promising and well received by the delegates, and we would like to build on this while providing the richness, authenticity, and energising atmosphere of our in-person Congress.

How will the content differ for Virtual and In-Person Congress Registration?

All abstract contributions will go through the same blind review process to ensure the same quality standards; however, virtual Congress offerings will be more limited and Virtual Registration will include access to fewer Congress Sessions via live-stream. The 2-Day Virtual events will be recorded and available on-demand on the Congress website.

What time zones will be used for the virtual sessions?

The scheduling of the virtual only sessions is still to be determined. The live Virtual Sessions will be listed in CEST (UTC+2 hours), and will seek to facilitate global participation. The live Virtual Sessions will be available for on-demand viewing after the conclusion of the Congress.

ABSTRACT SUBMISSION

What is the submission deadline for abstracts and proposals?

The Call for Contributions is now officially open. You can visit the Call for Contributions tab on the ISOCARP Congress Website to find the submission deadlines.

How can I submit an abstract?

You can submit an abstract or proposal through the ISOCARP Congress Website. You first need to create an account to be able to submit an abstract and attend the Congress. Please find the step-by-step instructions here.

Is there a character limit for my abstract?

Yes, please review the Submission Guidelines for word limits. The submission portal detects this limit and automatically cuts excess words/characters when the text is copy-pasted from another source. Be sure to check this before submission.

Can I submit my abstract under more than one category and/or in more than one Track?

No. Abstracts may only be submitted under one Submission Category (A-E), and under one Track. Abstracts that appear to be replicate versions of the same study will not be accommodated and are subject to a non-refundable processing fee.

REGISTRATION

Do I need to register to attend the ISOCARP Congress?

Yes, you will need to register and pay the applicable registration fees in order to attend the Congress. This is true for regular Participants as well as Presenters. All relevant information regarding fee categories and registration are available on this page. ISOCARP, as an NGO/non-profit organisation, is unfortunately not positioned to easily waive fees; however, graduated registration categories are offered.

I would like to have access to the In-Person Congress as well as the 2-Day Virtual component: do I need to register separately?

If you register for the In-Person Congress you will automatically be registered for the virtual events. No additional fees will be charged. Virtual Registration, however, does not include In-Person attendance. Virtual Participants who decide they would also like to attend In-Person can complete a second registration to pay the difference in registration cost. Fee information is available on this page.

I am one of the authors of a research paper/case study report. Am I required to register for the Congress to have my full submission included in the Proceedings?

Yes. At least one author (of submissions with multiple authors) will have to register by the indicated deadline to have their contribution published in the proceedings.

REGISTRATION + PARTICIPATION

As a virtual participant, may I ask questions or participate in the In-person Discussions?

Our 2022 Congress is not a hybrid format. While we are providing virtual-only Congress Sessions, these sessions will primarily provide opportunities for viewing, and will not provide opportunities for Virtual Participants to interact with Presenters.

Will all sessions be available online for all participants?

The 2-day virtual-only Congress Programme will be made available online for virtual participation. A limited selection of Plenary and Track Sessions of the In-Person Congress will be available for viewing by Virtual Congress Participants.

What are the Sessions and events I can join?

If you register for the In-person Category, you will have full access to all sessions, plenary events, walkshops, and workshops. If you register for the virtual component, only selected sessions will be available. Information on the Brussels Congress Programme is available here.
